Roger and I began
our careers and were employed at Girls and Boys Town for a combined 35
years. During this time we discovered the “gap” in services for very
young children with behavior problems. I resigned from Girls and Boys
Town in September 1999 to begin planning for Behave’n and to write our
first book, “The
Sleep Fairy.” |
||
In November 2000 we began a day treatment program to help families with young children in a small home on 103rd & Center. On November 5, 2000 we enrolled our first 4 year old and by June 2001 we were at capacity of 12 young children with a waiting list. It soon became evident we needed more space to help more children. |
||
In July 2002 we moved to our current location at 8922 Cuming St. With some renovation Behave’n could now serve up to 39 children. |
||
In May 2003 the book, “The
Sleep Fairy” was self-published
by our own Behave’n Kids Press, Inc. and our hopes that it would be the
first of many books to help children and families. By July 2004 research
was published on “The Sleep Fairy” in the Journal of Pediatric Psychology,
volume 29, no 5, titled: Brief Report: A “Storybook” Ending to Children’s
Bedtime Problems-The Use of a Rewarding Social Story to Reduce Bedtime
Resistance and Frequent Night Waking, R.V. Burke, B. R. Kuhn and J.L. Peterson.
In 2004 Behave’n Kids Press printed our second edition of “The Sleep Fairy.” |
||
September
2004 we began Behave’n
Community Services, Inc. which provides family therapy, training,
consultation and community treatment aide services within the community.
These programs have helped hundreds of families and agencies as they specialize
with therapeutic services with the very young child. |

October
2005 began the addition to the Behave’n property on Cuming Street. The
need for services and wait list was growing. Our plans included B’yond
Learning Center which provides parents and children with the finest preschool
experience possible with a wonderful twist. In addition to providing
a solid academic base to prepare children for Kindergarten, B’yond included lessons in basic social and emotional skills
like respect for themselves and others. Now Behave’n would have the opportunity
to help not only the children with severe and chronic behavior problems
but all others. This new addition also provided a much awaited nursery
for our employees children and ample office space for our therapists and
administrative support staff. |
||
June 2006 we moved into the new addition and renovation
and expansion continued on the existing building. |
||
October 2006 marked a new book, “Mini
Methods or Madness - Small steps that make BIG changes in your kids’
behavior,” debut. Behave’n
now had successfully completed a parenting guide book for all parents.
And quickly we began working on our next children’s’ book. |
||
In March 2007 Behave’n was finally using the entire
new and renovated facility. Within the new addition we would also begin
an alternative school for young children. The school was approved in March
of 2007 also. Behave’n could now serve up to 99 children in the facility
and even more families could be helped through our Community Services. |
||
April 2007 began a new endeavor, the purchase of a building in Lincoln, NE to expand our day treatment services in Nebraska. The Lincoln site began serving children in March of 2008. This site serves 53 children in the day treatment center. |
